HAPPY TAILS!
Stories from our Adoptive Parents

DAVEY

FROM PATRICE, S.A.V.E.

Davey was wandering around the neighborhood alone, and an animal lover saved him just as he was about to become a snack for an enormous dog from another yard. She called S.A.V.E. and we put Davey's picture on our website to help find him a good home.

Julie saw Davey's picture on our website and fell in love. She keeps in touch all the time telling us all about the various adorable things Davey does. We are so happy for them both and love hearing all the "happy tails."

FROM JULIE, DAVEY'S MOM

Sharon sent me Davey's adoption forms and I sent them back with some pictures and a small donation for the other guys you take in.

Meanwhile, Davey is beginning to look like fuzzy wuzzy as his coat grows in. Cute. I have decided he is not digging, and teaching Jack to dig, gopher holes. Davey is digging bomb shelters and he wants Jack to be safe too. He is tapping me on the shoulder at this moment which is something he does when I'm at the computer. Better than whacking me with one of his monkey toys, which he also does. Speaking of toys, it looks like several toddlers live here--toys are strewn across every floor of every room. This morning I woke up with a soft, fleecy duck on my pillow.

Hope you all are hanging tough.

Davey discovered watermelon last night and loves it. He asked for ten bites of it. I guess the country life agrees with him. He gets happier everyday. He and Jack and Pete are out for a morning walk in the woods. He will need a bath when he gets back because he rolls in things that smell good to him...ha ha

So did you get the pictures? Cute, heh?

Davey has a new trick. He digs for treasure in bed just before we go to sleep. Last night he "dug" through my expensive bottom sheet. It was hard to holler at him because I was laughing. So I've thrown that shredded bottom sheet out and I'm going to tie his paws together tonight (just kidding). He and Jack are getting very comfortable with one another. They wrestle about 15 hours a day chase five hours and sleep about four. ha ha They are wrestling behind me right now. Yesterday Davey was sitting in a chair with Jack and they were looking out a long window that flanks the fireplace. Up walked the flock of twenty wild turkeys...Davey came and got me and wanted to know if he should bark...I said no, it's ok, they aren't coming in the house even though they are coming up the walkway. ha ha He seemed to say, you see the darnedest things out here in the woods.

Davey has learned "sit" with a cookie, and he is piddling in the house less and less, so we are making progress. Jack has learned down (which he will do for a cookie, but only on a throw rug--ha ha) and he has sit mastered even without a cookie.

Good boys.

Julie

Patrice,
The website is great. I showed Davey his picture and he says that he was thinner a month ago. Also, his coat is getting longer. Speaking of coats, Davey's not worried about the drop in temps, he has a nice thinsulate lined winter coat. Did I mention that he and Jack have collars with their names and phone numbers embroidered on them and matching leads?

Davey kisses me now and then, but the big FUSS he saves for Pete, his policeman hero and dad. When Pete comes home, he literally has to sit down immediately so that Davey can hug him (Davey puts both paws around Pete's neck and showers him with kisses.) When Pete gets in bed, Davey repeats the hug and kisses for about five minutes until Pete ruffles Davey's fur and says ok, let's go to sleep now. Then Davey curls up between us; Jack meanwhile goes under the covers between our feet. Four or five cats tiptoe in after the lights are out. Chuck sleeps next to Pete on his pillow, One-eye in between us on a pillow, Tea sleeps on top of me, Sylvester sleeps next to Tea, Gray sleeps next to him. Sometimes Ishi and Rita try to come in too, but we fill up early and don't take reservations. Francis sleeps on the down sofa in the living room, Janie sleeps on the chair, Thistle sleeps in the cat bed in a woven basket. Bub, the latest long haired rescue kitten, sleeps on the rug next to my side of the bed, but always accompanies me to the bathroom, where he expects to sit on my lap and be petted. I'm not sure where Cinnamon sleeps.

The two backdoor feral cats, Outdoor Mommy and Fat Cheeks, (both of whom I trapped and spayed) sleep in the new cedar dog house I bought for them that has a porch and deck, is insulated, and has an insulated floor pad as well as a cat shelf. They eat breakfast and dinner on their own porch now.

You should hear Davey snoring behind me, big sound for such a small dog. He likes to go to bed early when it gets dark so soon, and he wants to be rested for his daily constitutional in the morning.

Since someone on the site, (I read all the happy tails) mentioned that you like poetry here's my Christmas poem from a year ago.

full moon before yuletide

it's full moon before yuletide
i and the goofy dog jack who came to live with us last April

are awake
restive in the silver light

he doesn't particularly want to go out, but doesn't turn down
an invitation to the back door

i notice the mail pete brought in sometime after midnight
he'd worked a double because the storm took down power lines and trees

i read the christmas letter my friend wrote
full of snow, empty landscapes

loss,
and loving shadows

i join jack in the moonlight
without a coat, i fill the birdfeeders in the 15 degree air,
stars like ornaments in the night sky

then jack and I try to settle back into bed
but sweet countenaced, he bites at moonbeams

i tilt my face and smile as i sink my teeth into the air
pete laughs out loud and joins us, chomping on the luminous dark

the cats feign puzzlement
but flick their tails in amusement

eyes glowing gold
in the full moon before yuletide

Dear Patrice,

Davey is enjoying his celebrity status on the new website; I emailed his story to a friend in Germany and she pronounced him adorable. She has been persuaded, after only one prompt from me, to adopt a homeless cat for Christmas.

Davey has really settled in now and feels secure. He is a complete gentleman and no longer piddles anywhere but outside. Right now, he has fallen asleep behind me, alongside his brother Jack and their toy monkey, which they drag everywhere. We gave the boys new fleece toy bones yesterday and they managed to squeak the toys so much that the squeakers will squeak no more. I counted their toys strewn though the house and they have twenty.

After they killed their squeaky bones, Jack brought Pete his leash; Pete laughed and said ok fellas, let's go for a walk. Jack and Davey's tails were flying like victorious battle flags down the driveway.

Last night Davey decided the apple I was eating looked interesting and he pressed his nose up against my face until I gave him a bite. He ate the Red Delicious, chewing enthusiastically, then stuck his nose by mine again, and so we shared the apple.

The biggest change in Davey is I think the expression in his eyes. He is learning to trust again, knows love, and THAT is my Christmas present.

Julie

we love happy endings!
