FROM GOLDIE'S MOM, BARBARA 11-25-02
We're in heaven with Goldie, though I can't wait for the trainer to
help us solve this riddle of why she insists on peeing in the building but not
outside (she did poop outside). The second time she peed in the building we
were in the lobby, and we had just come in from a walk outside, where she
didn't pee at all. Go figure. A neighbor of mine who has a dog suggested we
walk her hourly these first few days, until she gets used to the new
environment, so we've walked her six times already!
She didn't do too badly in the car. She had
her outbursts of course, but in between there were pretty long stretches where
she was quiet. So we're hopeful the car issue will work out, and anyway we're
determined that it will.
The boys are deliriously happy. Jesse even cried tears of joy after we were
home with her for awhile, and Daniel kept hugging and thanking me. It was quite
a process getting them to go to bed -- it was so hard for them to part with
her. These boys needed a dog, and they just can't get over how precious Goldie
is. We were very lucky indeed to get her. I feel like one of our guardian
angels must have had something to do with this, so amazing is it that we got
Goldie.
Daniel gave her
this really densely packed stuffed animal right after we got home, and boy does
she love it! We're letting her on the sofa in the family room (it's
slipcovered), and she loves to sit on the lap of whoever's on the sofa and chew
away on her new stuffed animal. She's also played a lot of catch. It's just way
too cool that she can do this. (My husband's been working today so hasn't met
her yet; he'll flip over this catching thing. As wild as he was about our old
dog (who died over 6 years ago), he always lamented the fact that Artie, the
dog, couldn't play catch, had no interest.)
Thank you both for
EVERYTHING.
I'll keep you
posted re the vet and the trainer.
Best, Barbara
FROM PATRICE, S.A.V.E. Update added 12-19-02
This is another example of a loving family
dedicated to making things work. Goldie had been very difficult at first, but
they got a good trainer, they tried with all their hearts and now we have a
happy ending. Moral of the story and word to the wise for those whose new pets
are not "immediately perfect": Sometimes you have to work at something to make
it right, and with time, love, care, sensitivity and dedication to making
things work it usually does. People have to give the adopted animals a chance
to come to themselves and become pets!
FROM GOLDIE'S MOM, BARBARA 12-19-02
The best possible news: Saul was here
yesterday, and he's very clear that we can keep Goldie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAY!!!!
Saul's been
training us at least as much as he's been training Goldie, since of course
we're the ones who are with her all the time. He's a great teacher, and I have
to say all five of us have been very good students. There's still the
occasional aggressive moment, but much, much less than before, and now it's
predictable dog stuff like if Daniel walks to close to her new bone. But
we give her a correction whenever she does something like this, and she
immediately becomes submissive and contrite. Also, her aggression has simply
been growling no more nipping or lunging. She's thoroughly responsive to
the training, and it's clear that the problem is not
genetic.
I simply cannot
believe our luck!! She's so delectable I know I keep saying that, but
it's true. I feel like we won the lottery. Ira is totally falling for her,
especially now that he knows we're keeping her. (And such reactions she gets on
the street!)
So we'll
have that tag ceremony later today. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
Best, Barbara
we love happy endings!
