in memory
In memory of the homeless animals who didn't find a home.
May the broken hearts of shelter workers be mended, and may the lost animals be remembered with love.
When you adopt a shelter pet, you save a life!

PET TIPS
NOVEMBER 2002

The holiday season is starting! Plans are already being made for time off from work, airline flights and hotel reservations during these upcoming busy months. If you're going to be away from home, don't forget about your pet in this time of excitement!

What to do? Here are some ideas:

1. Not everyone has family nearby to temporarily take your place with your little friend. You could ask a trusted, responsible friend or neighbor to come by to feed and interact with your pet. Make sure they have the time to do this, though – they may have plans of their own which may interfere with the care you'd want.
Make the holiday season stress-free for both you and your pet...make plans early

2. Kennels/Boarding Facilities. If you don't already have a kennel you patronize, talk to other pet owners. Make a few appointments to check out some of the boarding facilities in your area. Think about these questions before deciding:
  • Is the staff friendly and kind to both the animals and their owners?
  • Is the place reasonably clean?
  • Do animals get exercise and play times?
  • What is the feeding schedule?
  • What is the procedure in the event of a medical emergency?
  • Is there on-site staff after hours?
Don't wait until the last moment to start to look. You wouldn't leave your children at the first day care you run across; don't leave your beloved little friend in just any place. Remember, a strange new environment will be stressful enough...a little thought and time in choosing the best, most caring place will make the event a little less upsetting for everyone.

3. Pet sitters. With this increasingly popular option, your pet is able to stay in familiar surroundings with minimal distress in your absence. A certified pet sitter will come to your home at determined times each day to feed, walk, play with and love your pet. Look under "Pet Sitting" or "Pet Boarding" in the yellow pages, or ask your vet if he or she can recommend someone to you. Arrange for a visit by the pet sitter beforehand so that everyone can become familiar.

4. If you plan to travel by car, consider taking your pet with you. If you can't bear to be away from your pet and he or she is able (and willing!) to travel with you, take a look at the following websites for pet-friendly accomodations and some very important pet travel tips:

Whatever you decide is best for your pet this holiday season, make your plans early. Everyone will be more at ease when arrangements are comfortably in place.
